What is Being Hidden at Fort Calhoun?

Why is it that no recent photographs of Fort Calhoun nuclear plant are available?

I just conducted a search on metacrawler for Fort Calhoun to find ANY recent news.

I did find a story published July 27 by a local news site, the Abderene News, stating the plant will not be restrated until the flooding receeds.

Yet the image accompanying the story is from June 14.

Another story with no new news published within the last few days also relies on the same June 14 image.

Why aren't more recent images available?

Let me put this another way, if all is FINE with the plant then why aren't the media allowed to "cover it" in order to reassure the nation that the plant is safe?

Here is an excerpt from the story linked above that is worth noting:

"Fort Calhoun employees have been using an elevated catwalk more than a quarter-mile-long each day to cross the flooded parking lot. But the utility has been able to keep the inside of its buildings and key equipment mostly dry with a network of flood barriers and a number of pumps. The main building at Fort Calhoun is at 1,004 feet above sea level, which is about 2 feet below Wednesday's river level of 1,005 feet, 9 inches." http://www.aberdeennews.com/sns-bc-ne--missouririverflooding-nuclearsafety,0,258178.story

MAJIA HERE: let me repeat a key part of a sentence: "the utility has been able to keep the inside of its buildings and key equipment MOSTLY DRY with a network of flood barriers and a NUMBER OF PUMPS."

That does not sound good.

And tonight's radnet data make me think that yes the plant is VENTING "low levels" of radiation as hydrogen builds upon in spent fuel pools not sufficiently cooled by generators (this is simply my hypothesis based on the radiation release patterns I've observed).

Fukushima: A Narrative of Lies and Inadequate Safety Protections

written by me:

The nuclear disaster began on March 11 after Fukushima Reactor No. lost water. Fukushima No. 1 reactor exploded Saturday March 12 after venting of the reactor failed to release pressure. On Monday March 14th an explosion occurred at No. 3 reactor. After the second explosion reported on June 15, “officials” at the Fukushima plant reported “there was no serious radiation leak, but acknowledged they had moved workers for safety reasons as a precaution” (Hayashi, 2011, p. A1).

Furthermore, it was reported that the “containment structures of the three reactors—which house the all-important reactor vessels—remain intact, Japanese official stressed, preventing large-scale radiation leaks” (Hayashi, 2011, p. A). Later, on March 15, an explosion occurred in reactor #2. As of March 29, officials reportedly suspected only a “partial meltdown” had occurred in reactor #2 (Morse & Obe, 2011, A12).

During the midst of these disasters, Japanese authorities insisted that there was little to no danger. On March 12, University of Tokyo Professor Naoto Sekimura appeared repeatedly on Japanese television to reassure local residents that all was under control. David McNeill of CNN reports Sekimura’s comments: “‘Only a small part of the fuel may have melted and leaked outside,’ he said. Residents near the power station should ‘stay calm,’ because ‘most of the fuel remains inside the reactor, which has stopped operating and is being cooled’” (cited in McNeill, 2011 CNNGo.com http://www.cnngo.com/tokyo/life/tell-me-about-it/david-mcneill-whos-telling-truth-fukushima-448215#ixzz1PMTJwTk1).

In April, A former nuclear regulator who had served as a consultant to TEPCO in April claimed there was no danger of a total meltdown (Ex-Regulator resigns http://www.reuters.com/article/video/idUSTRE73I10E20110419?videoId=204721879)

In addition to withholding information about the state of the reactors, TEPCO and the Japanese Government suppressed information about the scale of radiation released. It took Japanese officials over a month to disclose large scale radiation releases that occurred at the Fukushima plant in mid-March (Tabuchi, Bradsher, Pollack, 2011).

Japan used a system called Speedi—System for Prediction of Environmental Emergency Dose information—to model March releases and blamed the delay in reporting results to the public in mid-April to their efforts to narrow the margin of error in their calculations, although nuclear regulators in other countries were privy to Speedi’s results early on (Tabuchi, Bradsher, Pollack, 2011).

In July the Atomic Energy Society of Japan publicly criticized the Japanese government and TEPCO for delays an insufficient reporting of Speedi data to the public (“Nuclear Accident,” 2011):

"The society notes that there is the possibility that the damage to people's health from radiation exposure has increased because the government, Tepco and other related institutions did not properly disclose information on the status of the nuclear accidents and the environmental contamination by radioactive substances. It says that although they had information that must be disclosed, they have not done so. An example that surfaced recently is the education and science ministry's failure to immediately disclose the name of a radiation hot spot in Namie, Fukushima Prefecture." http://search.japantimes.co.jp/cgi-bin/ed20110708a1.html

In June, Japan’s nuclear safety agency acknowledged suspicion that the official statement of the radiation releases for March of 370,000 terabecquerels (publicized in April) had been grossly under-estimated ( McCurry “Japan Doubles” 2011 ).

Japan's nuclear safety agency doubled the amount of radiation previously reported by TEPCO to have “leaked” from the Fukushima Daiichi plan in the first week of the accident (McCurry, “Japan Doubles” 2011). This new figure of 770,000 terabequerels reported by the Japanese Nuclear Safety Agency failed to calculated radiation losses after the first week into the air or sea....

Japanese Kan's Awakening?

NHK: Kan criticizes nuke watchdog for manipulation

Prime Minister Naoto Kan has criticized Japan's nuclear regulator for trying to manipulate public opinion on nuclear power.

Kan attended an energy policy forum on Sunday in Chino, north of Tokyo. He referred to the alleged manipulation of opinion on nuclear energy by the Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency....

...Kan said the current nuclear administration and system totally lack the ability of responding to nuclear accidents. He put the blame on the realignment of government offices about a decade ago under Prime Minister Ryutaro Hashimoto that created various committees in the Cabinet Office.

Kan expressed his resolve to address the fundamental reorganization of institutions related to energy policy, and not just the separation of the agency from the economy ministry. He said he will pursue a fundamental reconstruction of the nuclear and energy administration from a position free from any vested interests.

MAJIA HERE: Wouldn't it be wonderful if Obama could come forward about the incredible lying and deceipt orchestrated by the NRC in the U.S. as well....

JET STREAM IS PRETTY FAR NORTH—CANADA—BUT DOES DIP DOWN AROUND 7/30-7/31 IN THE SOUTH DAKOTA AREA SO THESE HIGH READINGS IN VERY SPECIFIC AREAS COULD BE FROM THE JET STREAM. http://www.weatherimages.org/data/imag192.html

PERHAPS OMAHA’S READINGS ARE BEING MANIPULATED DOWNWARD...

The US is a Plutonomy: Here Comes Neo-Feudalism

Plutonomy Defined: a society characterized by a small, wealthy elite and a large, disenfranchized group with marginal economic power.

The first use of the term “plutonomy” to describe the evolving economic distribution was, I believe, a 2005 Citigroup document dated October 16, 2005 titled, “Equity Strategy: Plutonomy: Buying Luxury, Explaining Global Imbalances.” The document describes a world “dividing into two blocs—the plutonomies, where economic growth is powered by and largely consumed by the wealthy few, and the rest” (p. 1). The U.S. is a “key” plutonomy characterized by

"disruptive technology-driven productivity gains, creative financial innovation, capitalist-friendly cooperative governments, an international dimension of immigrants and overseas conquests invigorating wealth creation, the rule of law, and patenting inventions." (Citigroup, 2005, pp. 1-2)

Within the plutonomy, the productive and consumptive capabilities of populaces lessen in significance compared to the wealth accumulated by the few through technology that replaces workers, financial “innovations” capable of accumulating wealth outside of production (e.g., through securities transactions), and through overseas colonial exploitation of resources and labor.

The International Forum on Globalization (IFG) issued a report in 2011 describing the evolving “plutonomy” characterized by corporate power and the unfettered influence of “a new dangerous class of politically dominant billionaires”:

Plutonomy: A newer threat cited for the first time by the board was the astonishing emergence of a new dangerous class of politically dominant billionaires. Operating on a global scale, as well as within countries, these oligarchs are increasingly able to relate to the world nearly as if it was their own feudal enterprise, generally out of view, and with few controls. Recognizing the realities of resources limits, many of these individuals now see their profit opportunities as no longer solely dependent on corporate economic growth, but equally on systemic control of vital resources, including food and water." (IFG, 2001)

In a world of dwindling resources, the elites seek to control not just money but also fertile land and fresh water.

Plutonomies are funtamentally antithetical to democratic political processes. Plutonomies are birthing a new system of global neo-feudalism where elite corporations and individuals control the vast majority of global resources and the rest of us will be forced to pledge our allegiance, and give up our liberal rights, to these new feudal lords or be left with nothing at all....

Fukushima 29.6 Times Hiroshima

I posted this statistic earlier
http://majiasblog.blogspot.com/2011/07/has-fukushima-released-29-times.html

However, now blogger Ex-SKF has the interview available with English subtitles (click in cc on screen if the subtitles do not show)

This is a must watch video

On Fog, Fire, and Steam at Fukushima

Over the last 4 months I've posted links to YouTube videos showing major releases of steam and maybe smoke from Fukushima. E.G.

I want to emphasize these events depicted are not of "fog."

Fog does not rise up in columns from buildings moving vertically into the air before spreading. Fog doesn't have profound heat signatures.

Additionally, many nuclear authorities including Dr. Kaku, Arnie Gunderson, and radiation scientists in Japan, confirm that Fukushima is emitting radioactive steam, everyday, continuously...

Based on the high levels of Iodine-131 found at the plant, it is believed that nuclear criticalities continue to occur and their radioactive byproducts are dispersed throughout Japan and, to a lesser extent, the rest of the world by weather patterns.

The radiation readings I've been posting every day from radnet are for the most part quite elevated by Fukushima radiation.

We are all being slowly poisoned.

Many people want to believe that their government will warn them of, protect them from, danger.

Unfortunately, that belief is simply false.

Although governments may be willing to warn publics of some sorts of threats (e.g., "terrorism"), radiation is NOT one of them.

There now exists over 60 years of evidence of government cover-ups of radiation contamination. In the U.S. the government has lied about the existence and scope of perhaps ALL planned and unplanned radiation releases.

Here are some links to substantiate my claim

Rough translation of his speech. He is one of the best experts in Japan

0. He is an expert (lead scientist, directer of the center, national adviser to some cutting edge national project) on radioactive isotope; studied how to use radiation to tackle cancer; also studied its negative consequences through internal exposure

1. situation
Total leakage of radioactive material [Bq] matters; not its rate [Sv, or Gy]

According to their estimation, 29.6 times of radioactive materials have been leaked from Fukushima Diichi compared to those leaked because of atomic bomb explosion in Hirohsima. So “volume” is worse in Fukushima than in Hiroshima.

Decay rates of radioactive materials are different: that from atomic bomb explosion is 1/1000 a year, while that from nuclear power plant leakage is 1/10 a year. So Fukushima case shall be worse than Hiroshima, even in the “rate” of decay.

A Shocking Discovery at Fukushima

Why Underground Entombment At Fukushima Daiichi Won't Succeed
By Yoichi Shimatsu
Exclusive to Rense.com
7-28-11

Majia here: I am going to excerpt just 2 passages

(excerpted) At Fukushima, however, the quake damage and loss of water from inside the reactors caused many fuel rods to shatter. Broken pieces of uranium fell to the bottom of the reactor cores and melted through their shrouds into the containment chambers. The chemical evidence of slaked lime (calcium hydrate) in the air indicates the rod fragments then seared past the containment shields and burned through the reactor buildings' concrete footing. The continuous release of iodine-131 for more than 4 months in both air and sea water samples also indicates nonstop nuclear fission...

A shocking discovery at Fukushima was that zirconium (used as a "transparent" - allowing passage of neutrons - protective cladding around the fuel rods) when superheated can become a catalyst for an esoteric type of nuclear fission. At extreme temperatures, zirconium ignites even the tiniest quantities of airborne nuclear isotopes, releasing "blue lightning".

This means that zirconium catalysis could also be occurring underground, triggering mini-fission events. This sort of nuclear reaction is terra incognita, a yet unexplored frontier of physics, the joker in the deck.

Vested Interests in Nuclear Power: An Example

NUCLEAR ENGERY IS A GLOBAL BUSINESS WITH TRILLIONS OF PROFITS FOR MINERS, NUCLEAR ENGINEERING COMPANIES, AND PLANT OPERATORS WITH NEARLY ALL THE RISK SHIFTED TO GLOBAL PUBLICS

India finds a uranium treasure. Asia Times.
By Raja Murthy

MUMBAI - It's now a uranium treasure. Following the recent US$22 billion find of gold, diamonds and all manner of trinkets in a south Indian temple, explorers in the south Indian state of Andhra Pradesh have found one of the world's largest deposits of uranium.

The Tummalepalle mine in the Cuddapah district was estimated in 2007 to have nearly 50,000 tonnes of uranium ore, enough to feed an 8,000 megawatt nuclear power plant until year 2047. [1] Explorers at the Atomic Minerals Directorate for Exploration and Research, India's official uranium hunters, now estimate the region could provide three times as much - or about 150,000 tonnes of uranium ore.

The uranium mega-find was disclosed on July 18 by Atomic Energy Commission chairman Srikumar Banerjee, when inaugurating the second pair of 700-megawatt indigenously built nuclear reactors in Rawatbhata town in Rajasthan, northwestern India. The find matches the world's existing single-largest source of uranium, Australia's McArthur River mine.

....India, one of 31 countries with nuclear-powered electricity, gets less than 3% of its energy from nuclear plants. The country has 27 of the world's 450 nuclear reactors that in total generate approximately 350 gigawatts (1 gigawatt = 1,000 megawatts), or about 16% of the world's electricity. [2].

India plans to nearly double its current capacity of 4.7 GW to 7.3 GW by March 2012, and triple nuclear-sourced energy by 2020 - still only half of China's planned capacity of 40 GW by 2020, and only a small part of India's electricity needs.

...United States nuclear reactor equipment companies such as General Electric-Hitachi and Westinghouse were expected to earn billions from India through contracts for nuclear power plants following the agreement, which then-US president George W Bush strongly pushed as one of the "highlights" of his presidency. It was also the deal that nearly brought down Manmohan Singh's government in 2008 over nationwide opposition.

But riches from India's nuclear expansion riches have not yet flowed the US way; one hindrance is clause 17(b) in India's Civil Nuclear Liability Bill of 2010. The legislation makes suppliers of reactors liable for 80 years for any industrial accident, both to the Indian government and private litigators.

That's okay for state-run nuclear reactor builders in France and Russia backed with taxpayer money, but not for privately owned firms in the US. So French companies like Areva and Russia's Rosatom, rather than their US counterparts, are securing chunks of the $150 billion India is spending on developing its nuclear power industry....

What is the Source of the High Radiation Readings in Pierre SD?

It is impossible to determine with certainty because so many cities in the region are posted as "under review" by the EPA so it is impossible to triangulate.

On the one hand, the radiation there could be from the jet stream, which has been overhead.

On the other hand, what is strange is that cities on similar latitudes in adjoining states, like Duluth MN, don't have these high levels.

I've read that the EPA has outsourced its data collection to a company with a less than impeccable record.

The blogger Portblog has demonstrated how the EPA can deliberately manipulate the radiation readings, making them look much lower than they are http://www.potrblog.com/

So, I know that one cannot trust the EPA's data with confidence.

Still, I don't understand why Pierre SD has such high levels as compared to other places in the region.

This is a wild guess but could the National Underground Science Laboratory at Homestake (NUSL), "the world’s deepest and most extensive underground science laboratory" be the source of Pierre's high levels?

This lab, including 375 miles of tunnels, was previously a mine and is known for flooding.

Water had to be removed when the mine was converted into a lab.

A large room was recently constructed out of the mine but before it was built studies had to be conducted to make sure the room would not collapse.

Is it possible parts of the lab flooded and nuclear experiments at the lab went awry?

This is a wild guess but it is the only thing that popped up when I tried to determine the source of Pierre's high readings.

Radioactive Peaches

In early July Michael Collins of EnviroReporter found peaches that were radioactive: Two peaches sustained 81 CPM and above or over two times background (208% of site background).

http://www.enviroreporter.com/radiation-station-stats/

UC Berkeley's radiation engineering department sought to debunk Collins' results.

I'm an academic and I know that most academics try and operate objectively. However, in fact, even the most objective among us are influenced by unconscious suppositions and reasoning heuristics.

Science itself is inevitably biased by paradigms of understanding that dictate how scientists "see" problems in the world.

So, good science is not really about establishing universal truths. Rather, good science is about testing ideas to find out which ones are, or are not, supported by evidence and then being open to new paradigms of understanding when the hypotheses are increasingly not supported by empirical data.

I think with the peaches the good faculty at Berkeley may have been too dismissive of the evidence because of their unproven assumption that Fukushima radiation cannot be dense enough here in the U.S. to cause contamination.

I'm not dissing Berkeley. It is a great institution that my grandfather graduated from and both my parents attended for at least a couple of years.

But even the best schools and the best scholars make mistakes and/or are at times blinded by their assumptions and their methodological blinders.

For a good analysis of how/why this might have occurred with the peaches read

UC Berkeley Nuclear: If Its Not Raining Here, Its Not Raining ANYWHERE?

http://www.potrblog.com/

 (excerpted)
The UC Berkeley Nuclear Engineering BRAWN team seems to have to gone out of their way to rationalize why the detection of radioactive peaches in California is no reason to investigate further. Its the equivalent of telling fire spotters to ignore smoke in the woods during fire season; the public safety implications are obvious. It is easy to conclude that there is bias coming out of the BRAWM team.

It is a troubling bias because these people are responsible for training the next generation of nuclear engineers who will sign off on the safety of nuclear projects. I continue to hope that it is a bias driven out of ignorance / incompetence rather than a desire to keep their entire undergraduate nuclear engineer enrollment from dropping to zero again like it did after Three Mile Island....

The gist of one claim coming out of UC Berkeley is that a Geiger counter with a pancake tube specifically designed to detect contamination is not capable of rapidly detecting the difference between background radiation and 2 times background radiation. They couch that claim by treating that report as if it came out of an instrument that displayed raw data, instead of the 30 second moving average it actually displays. They also ignore that the reported detections were the MINIMUM SUSTAINED READINGS from two different peaches; and that the local background was also read.

That is enough information to make any person who knows the least little bit about Geiger counters to cringe at UC Berkeley's claims. But it gets worse, any good scientist adept at data analysis and collection would cringe when the BRAWN team suggested that a Poisson uncertainty should be applied to data resulting from a moving average. Combine that with their use of such dubious logic as a rationale to avoid further investigation, and you have what I refer to as DOUBLE STUPID....

I just watched a video, Chernobyl A Million Casualties, in which Dr. Janette Sherman is interviewed by Dr. Karl Grossmanhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tRO0wXjblJc

How many people died from the Chernobyl disaster?

The official International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) report puts Chernobyl deaths at 4000, as asserted in their report, the Chernobyl Forum.

The IAEA research for this analysis came from 350 articles written in the English language, which were examined by the Chernobyl Forum.

In contrast, Dr. Sherman’s report with Alexey V. YABLOKOV, Vassily B. NESTERENKO, Alexey V. NESTERENKO titled Chernobyl Consequences of the Catastrophe for the People and the Environment, looked at 5000 reports and articles written in Russian and other languages in the region and involved interviews conducted with doctors and researchers all over the region.

These Chernobyl researchers found 985,000 deaths from Chernobyl between 1986 and 2004 from cancer, heart disease, and excess infant mortality.

Dr. Sherman reports that research found that every organ in the human body was adversely affected.

Furthermore, every system studied by the researchers in the Chernobyl area found that every system was changed, without exception including, human biological systems, fish systems, trees, bacteria, viruses, etc. To repeat, every system was “changed” without exception.

There are no bees left in Chernobyl. Birds have smaller brains than elsewhere. Genetic defects are being transmitted across generations, including human genetic defects.

Only 20% of children in Belarus today are “healthy”; that is, only 20% of the children in Belarus are not impacted obviously in terms of their cognitive or physical health.

The truths about nuclear power’s effects on human health have been veiled in secrecy, hidden by lies and through falsification of data for decades. There has been a cover-up of nuclear energy’s health effects for decades.

Since 1959 the World Health Organization has agreed not to publish any reports without the consent of the IAEA.

HERE IS A REAL LIFE CONSPIRACY AND IT PREVAILS TODAY AS SCIENTISTS AND REGULATORS HIDE AND DISTORT DATA OR SIMPLY FAIL TO LOOK AT ALL…

Chernobyl continues to maim and kill.

The book is available for free here

Fukushima has relased more radiation into the air and sea than Chernobyl did.

"It Cannot Happen Here!": Read PROPAGANDA

This piece by Reuters labeled an “investigation” is, as a whole, propaganda even if it does have some useful information, like plant rankings.
http://graphics.thomsonreuters.com/11/07/JapanNuclearRadiation.pdf

Why is it propaganda?

It is propaganda because the article that locates the most dangerous plant IN the U.S. (Ohio) ALSO states Fukushima could never happen here because of years of enhanced U.S. regulatory scrutiny

(excerpted) “In the United States — Japan’s early model in nuclear power — Fukushima’s lagging safety record would have prompted more intensive inspections by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission. It would have also invited scrutiny from the U.S. Institute of Nuclear Power Operations, an independent nuclear safety organization established by the U.S. power industry after the Three Mile Island accident in 1979, experts say.” (end quote from article)

Incredible NHK Video on Heroic Scientists' Efforts (with NHK) to Create a Radiation Map

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LethPJ9Vd8Y

I haven't finished watching it yet. I had to stop for awhile after breaking down in tears when the scientists interviewed a couple staying in an area with over 20 microsieverts an hour in order to feed their beloved pets, a cat and a dog...

(the detectors only read up to 20 microsieverts an hour)

20 microsieverts an hour is 175 milliesieverts a year. This is very high!

I really don't know what to say...

Fukushima Worker Sacrifices

A young man sacrificing his future to shut down crippled Fukushima nuclear plant
http://ex-skf.blogspot.com/2011/07/uk-independent-young-man-sacrificing.html

By David McNeill 26 July 2011

(Excerpted) Atsushi Watanabe (not his real name) is an ordinary Japanese man in his 20s, about average height and solidly built, with the slightly bemused expression of the natural sceptic. Among the crowds in Tokyo, in his casual all-black clothes, he could be an off-duty postman or a construction worker. But he does one of the more extraordinary jobs on the planet: helping to shut down the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant.

That job, in a complex that experienced the first triple-reactor meltdown after Japan's 11 March earthquake and tsunami, means he will never marry or raise a family for fear of health problems down the line, and may not even live to see old age. But he accepts that price. "There are only some of us who can do this job," he says. "I'm single and young and I feel it's my duty to help settle this problem." […]

It paid 180,000 yen (£1,400) a month. Since April, when he agreed to go back inside the Daiichi plant's gates, he has been paid the same amount – plus Y1,000 a day that he calls "lunch money"....

....The government last week announced that its January timetable for bringing the Fukushima plant back under control is on target, but the plant is still leaking one billion becquerels of radiation an hour, according to Tepco, and the state of the uranium fuel inside its three crippled reactors remains a mystery.

"The fuel has melted, but melted through or not – we don't know," Mr Watanabe says. "It's at the bottom of the reactor. If it melts out, and meets water, it would be a major crisis. The engineers are working very hard to get it under control."

....

@Antony, it is 1 billion becquerels per HOUR. It's in TEPCO's document. And that's just cesium number, and not in iodine equivalent.

Geiger Counter Readings in Canada

A poster at ENews shared his geiger counter readings. His charts are very easy to read and are contextualized with maps of the jet stream locations.

here is how he describes his methodology

vaporlock July 26, 2011 at 12:33 pm

I built an air collector that sits between my inside window and storm window with air vents to circulate the air but keep the equipment dry. The area is the peace country. It is on the east side of the mountains which explains negligible readings in Vancouver, but similar readings in Edmonton, Red Deer and Lloydminster. I use a Geiger Muller Counter calibrated with thorium @ 158CPM beta & Gamma bg @ 24 / thorite @ 38000CPM and a mantle 24CPM @ 3.75 mR/h

MAJIA HERE: HIS READINGS ARE OFTEN OVER .5 MICROSIEVERTS AN HOUR

THE RUSSIANS EVACUATED AT 5 MILLIESIEVERTS A YEAR, WHICH IS A LITTLE OVER .5 MICROSIEVERTS AN HOUR

HOWEVER, THE RUSSIANS PROBABLY EVACUATED BASED ON SOIL CONTAMINATION, RATHER THAN AIR READINGS (though I cannot confirm this for sure)

THE GENERAL POINT IS THAT CANADIANS ARE BEING EXPOSED TO A LOT OF RADIATION CONTAMINATION FROM FUKUSHIMA WHEN THE JET STREAM IS OVER THEIR HEADS....

What are the implications?

People should stay out of the rain when the jet stream is overhead.

People should demand their governments check for radiation contamination in food and drinking water.

Results should be published in clear formats in a timely manner.

Write your governments and demand transparency and accountability!

3 Mile Island the Script for Fukushima, Los Alamos, Fort Calhoun(?), and Countless Other Disasters

hat tip ENews

"I believe this is very good evidence that releases were thousands of times greater than the story we've been told," he said. "As we think about the current plans to open more nuclear reactors, when we hear -- which we hear often -- that no one was harmed at Three Mile Island, we really should question that."

Japan: Eating Radiation Contamination

As was the case in the U.S. gulf seafood, Japan has prioritized economic impact over public health. Although farmers and local civic authorities may check for food contamination, Japan has no centralized system for checking radiation contamination (Takada, 2011 http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2011-07-24/threat-to-japanese-food-chain-multiplies-as-cesium-contamination-spreads.html).

When conducted, testing often shows contamination. It is not surprising that high levels of radiation have been detected in Japanese food exports out of contaminated regions, particularly in tea and beef. For instance, radioactive cesium exceeding the Japanese government’s upper limits were found in Japanese black cattle shipped from a farm in the Fukushima prefecture in July of 2011 (“Testing System Urgently” 2011 http://mdn.mainichi.jp/perspectives/news/20110713p2a00m0na001000c.html).

Animals with radioactive emissions up to 100,000 counts per minute were considered safe by Japan’s health authorities. Approximately 12,000 cattle have been checked and shipped for human consumption. At 100,000 counts per minute, a human would require full-body decontamination (http://www.yomiuri.co.jp/dy/national/T110717002520.htm).

Dangerous radionuclides have also been found in high levels in sludge ash and sludge dewatering in Tokyo (http://translate.google.com/translate?act=url&hl=en&ie=UTF8&prev=_t&rurl=translate.google.com&sl=ja&tl=en&u=http://www.gesui.metro.tokyo.jp/oshi/infn0533.htm).

Japan has detected radiation levels 150 kilometers from the Daiichi nuclear plant that are as high as areas 50 kilometers from the plant (NHK “high levels of radioactivity” http://www3.nhk.or.jp/daily/english/21_06.html).

Citizens and local officials who conduct their own testing typically find much higher levels than those reported by the Japanese government. For example, a radiation survey reported in late July by Doshisha University and Kyoto Seika University of Fukushima City [in Fukushima Prefecture] found 56.9 microsieverts/hour at an elementary school and 20.8 microsieverts/hour at the Fukushima Prefectural Government building (Ex-SKF http://ex-skf.blogspot.com/2011/07/radiation-in-fukushima-city-order-of.html).

Japan's Decision to Let its Citizens Die

Perhaps the most poignant illustration of the Japanese government’s decisionality to allow the death of Japans citizenry is illustrated in a video of a July 19 meeting held by government officials with Fukushima citizens (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rVuGwc9dlhQ).

In the video, a spokesperson for the people of Fukushima repeatedly asks, “As other people do, people in Fukushima have a right to avoid the radiation exposure and live a healthy life, too. Don’t you think so?”

The government official, Akira Satoh, Director of the Local Nuclear Emergency Response Headquarters, responds, “The government has tried to reduce the radiation exposure dose as much as it can.”

The spokesperson presses, “So, are you saying that they don’t? they have that right, don’t they?” The government official responds, “I don’t know if they have that right.”

The Fukushima spokesperson then queries, “Do you mean that there is a difference in the radiation exposure standards between fukushima prefecture and other prefectures?” Mr. Satoh, the director, responds, “What I am saying is, the government has tried to reduce the radication [sic] exposure dose as much as it can.”

The audience reacts, disgruntled by the evasiveness and their spokesperson again presses, “The government isn’t applying a different standard to people in fukushima, is it?” Mr. Satoh concludes tersely, “I have already said all I could say.”

The government officials then left amidst audience members crying out that they want their children’s urine tested for radioactivity. The audience demanded also to know why the Soviets were able to evacuate over 200,000 children within 2 weeks of the disaster yet Japan, a “free society” fails to protect its citizenry. There were no answers from the departing officials.

Survival Depends on Our Actions

http://extinctionbynuclear.blogspot.com/2011/07/nuclear-fuel-cycles-cause-extinction.html

This is a very thoughtful post by someone who is experiencing the Fukushima disaster directly. Here is an excerpt:

"That livestock seem to be receiving more attention than children in the region is a disgrace. On March 10, we would not have been able to imagine that our children would be attending contaminated schools wearing dosimeters.

* Internal radioactivity will be passed on to our children’s children. Cesium will remain in the environment for 150 years. A parent can’t help viewing this threat as the result of unforgivable neglect. It’s past time that the authorities admit what they don’t know, and act now to move children out of contaminated areas and provide them with a chance at a future....

ON WEALTH, GREED, AND THE AMERICAN PLUTONOMY

HERE ARE 2 ARTICLES THAT DEMONSTRATE EMPIRICALLY HOW OUR COUNTRY HAS BEEN TRANSFORMED INTO A PLUTONOMY THAT BENEFITS ONLY THE TOP 1-3% OF THE POPULATION

Budgetary Deceit and America's Decline Jeffrey Sachs
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/jeffrey-sachs/budgetary-deceit-and-amer_b_907684.html

"As I shuttle between East Africa, where a severe drought threatens the lives of more than 10 million people, and Athens, where a financial crisis threatens Greece and all of Europe, I am shocked by the U.S. budget negotiations between Congress and President Obama.

"Every part of the budget debate in the U.S. is built on a tissue of willful deceit. Consider the Republican Party's double-mantra that the deficit results from "runaway spending" and that more tax cuts are the key to economic growth. Republicans claim that the budget deficit, around 10 percent of GDP, has been caused only by a rise in outlays. This is blatantly untrue. The deficit results roughly equally from a fall of tax revenues as a share of GDP and a rise of spending as a share of GDP….

"The Republicans also misrepresent the costs and benefits of closing the deficit through higher taxes on the rich. Americans wants the rich to pay more, and for good reason. Super-rich Americans have walked away with the prize in America. Our country is run by millionaires and billionaires, and for millionaires and billionaires, the rest of the country be damned. Yet the Republicans and their propaganda mouthpieces like Rupert Murdoch's media empire, claim with sheer audacity that taxing the rich would kill economic growth.

This trickle-down, voodoo, supply-side economics is the fig leaf of uncontrolled greed among the right-wing rich....

WHO ARE THESE WEALTHY ELITES WHO SEEM ABLE TO STEER OUR NATIONAL POLICIES IN WAYS THAT ARE DETRIMENTAL TO THE BOTTOM 95% OF THE POPULACE?

Who Rules America? An Investment Manager Breaks Down the Economic Top 1%, Says 0.1% Controls Political and Legislative Process

Article Sent in by G. William Domhoff, author of Who Rules America? [3]

This article was written by an investment manager who works with very wealthy clients. I knew him from decades ago, but he recently e-mailed me with some concerns he had about what was happening with the economy. What he had to say was informative enough that I asked if he might fashion what he had told me into a document for the Who Rules America Web site. He agreed to do so, but only on the condition that the document be anonymous, because he does not want to jeopardize his relationships with his clients or other investment professionals.

(excerpted)…Unlike those in the lower half of the top 1%, those in the top half and, particularly, top 0.1%, can often borrow for almost nothing, keep profits and production overseas, hold personal assets in tax havens, ride out down markets and economies, and influence legislation in the U.S. They have access to the very best in accounting firms, tax and other attorneys, numerous consultants, private wealth managers, a network of other wealthy and powerful friends, lucrative business opportunities, and many other benefits. Most of those in the bottom half of the top 1% lack power and global flexibility and are essentially well-compensated workhorses for the top 0.5%, just like the bottom 99%. In my view, the American dream of striking it rich is merely a well-marketed fantasy that keeps the bottom 99.5% hoping for better and prevents social and political instability. The odds of getting into that top 0.5% are very slim and the door is kept firmly shut by those within it.

The Upper Half of the Top 1%

Membership in this elite group is likely to come from being involved in some aspect of the financial services or banking industry, real estate development involved with those industries, or government contracting. Some hard working and clever physicians and attorneys can acquire as much as $15M-$20M before retirement but they are rare. Those in the top 0.5% have incomes over $500k if working and a net worth over $1.8M if retired. The higher we go up into the top 0.5% the more likely it is that their wealth is in some way tied to the investment industry and borrowed money than from personally selling goods or services or labor as do most in the bottom 99.5%. They are much more likely to have built their net worth from stock options and capital gains in stocks and real estate and private business sales, not from income which is taxed at a much higher rate. These opportunities are largely unavailable to the bottom 99.5%....

I think it’s important to emphasize one of the dangers of wealth concentration: irresponsibility about the wider economic consequences of their actions by those at the top. Wall Street created the investment products that produced gross economic imbalances and the 2008 credit crisis….

….Only Wall Street could put the economy at risk and it had an excellent reason to do so: profit. It made huge profits in the build-up to the credit crisis and huge profits when it sold itself as “too big to fail” and received massive government and Federal Reserve bailouts. Most of the serious economic damage the U.S. is struggling with today was done by the top 0.1% and they benefited greatly from it.

Not surprisingly, Wall Street and the top of corporate America are doing extremely well as of June 2011. For example, in Q1 of 2011, America’s top corporations reported 31% profit growth and a 31% reduction in taxes, the latter due to profit outsourcing to low tax rate countries. Somewhere around 40% of the profits in the S&P 500 come from overseas and stay overseas, with about half of these 500 top corporations having their headquarters in tax havens. If the corporations don’t repatriate their profits, they pay no U.S. taxes…
